Most people find us the same way. They spot a space capsule house on Instagram, decide they want three of them for a campsite, and then discover they have no idea what they are actually buying.

That is not their fault. The category is young, the terminology is a mess, and plenty of listings online treat capsule houses, container homes, and apple cabins as if they were interchangeable. They are not. The differences show up in your freight bill, in your installation crew, and in how the unit looks after five coastal winters.

We have been manufacturing these units in Weifang, Shandong since 2021, and our capsules now sit on sites in Europe, North America, Southeast Asia and the Middle East. This guide is close to what we tell buyers during a first call — sizes, materials, real cost drivers, installation timelines, and the mistakes worth avoiding.

The short version

What a space capsule house actually is

A space capsule house is a factory-built living unit with a rounded or boat-like shell, finished on the inside, and installed on site as a single piece or a handful of modules. Plumbing, wiring, insulation, walls, bathroom, kitchen and furniture are all assembled in a factory before the unit ever meets a truck.

The curved shape is not decoration. A rounded shell sheds wind and rain better than a flat-sided box, which is why these units hold up in exposed coastal and mountain locations where a converted container starts to struggle.

What it is not

Three confusions cost buyers real money, so let us clear them up early.

It is not a container home. A container home starts life as an ISO steel shipping box, cut and welded on site. A capsule shell is purpose-built from the ground up, which is why it can take a 270° panoramic window and a skylight without a structural fight. If you want that comparison in full, we wrote it up separately — see capsule house vs space capsule home vs mobile home.

It is not a tiny home on wheels. There is no trailer, no road registration, no towing. A capsule moves by crane and flatbed or by container. That is an advantage for durability, and a constraint if your site has no crane access.

It is not a static caravan. Caravans are built for holidays and degrade accordingly. A capsule is insulated for year-round use — our units are specified with polyurethane wall insulation and Low-E hollow glass, which is what keeps the interior comfortable through a real winter rather than a mild one.

Sizes, layouts and what fits inside

Capsule houses are sold by floor area, and the honest answer to "which size do I need" is: count your guests, then add one person's worth of storage. Undersizing is the single most common regret we hear about.

Our M-series runs from compact single-bedroom units up to large family layouts. Here is the compact flat-pack model in detail, since it is the one most first-time buyers start with.

ParameterM10 flat-pack capsule house
Length × width × height5.8 m × 3.5 m × 3.2 m
Floor area20 ㎡
Capacity1–2 persons
Included zonesBathroom, shower room, kitchen, dining area, master bedroom
ControlsWhole-house smart control (lighting, air conditioning, fresh air, electric door and window)
StructureAll-aluminum construction

Above M10 the differences come down to three things: how many people sleep comfortably, how much social space you want around the kitchen, and whether the unit needs a second bathroom. Larger models such as the M30, M42, M50, M60 and M70 change those answers without changing the construction. Full specifications for each are on the M-series modular space capsule page, and the same logic applies to the Apple Cabin range if you prefer a squarer footprint.

One practical note before you pick a size: measure the access route, not the plot. A 5.8 m unit needs a truck and crane that can reach the pad. We have watched two projects stall for a week because a garden gate was 3.4 m wide.

Materials: where the price difference actually lives

Two capsule houses can look identical in photos and be nothing alike in build. These are the components we would check before signing anything.

The shell

We use aviation-grade aluminum alloy skin with a fluorocarbon coating, over a hot-dip galvanized steel frame. The coating is what resists UV, salt air and temperature swings — the three things that kill cheap shells. Aluminum also bends rather than cracks, which matters during transport and lifting.

The insulation

High-density polyurethane wall panels do the thermal work. If a supplier cannot tell you the wall construction in layers, that is your answer about the quality of the build.

Glazing

Low-E hollow glass with a constant temperature and humidity system. Large curved glass looks spectacular and loses heat fast if it is single-pane, so this is not a place to accept a vague answer.

Ratings and certification

Our units are engineered to resist wind equivalent to level 12 and earthquakes to level 9, with a design service life of up to 50 years, and we ship with CE and ISO certification. Ask any manufacturer for the wind and seismic ratings in writing. If they cannot produce numbers, they have not tested.

Worth knowing: no pile foundation is required. The capsules sit on footings, which keeps site work cheap and means the unit can be relocated later without abandoning a concrete slab. Buyers planning seasonal repositioning on a campsite should weigh this heavily.

Flat-pack shipping changes your project economics

This is the part of the conversation most buyers have not thought about, and it is often where the real budget is won or lost.

Capsule houses are large, and large items are expensive to move. A fully assembled unit needs a flat-rack or a special over-width booking, and you pay for the air around it. A flat-pack design collapses into standard containers — our M10 ships in a 40HQ — which cuts freight cost, loosens road and logistics restrictions at your end, and simplifies onward delivery.

The trade-off is assembly. Flat-pack units need a crew on site for a short window. In our experience that is 3–4 workers over roughly 2–3 days, with no specialist construction team and no welding. Compare that to the alternative, where you are paying a senior construction crew for weeks.

What a space capsule house costs

Anyone quoting you a single number for "a space capsule house" is either guessing or selling you something narrow. Cost is driven by six variables:

  1. Floor area and layout — the shell, glazing and interior fittings all scale with size.

  2. Finish level — a shell-and-core unit and a turnkey unit with furniture, appliances and smart control are different products.

  3. Off-grid equipment — solar, wind and battery storage add cost but can remove a grid connection entirely. We sized a full off-grid system in this energy guide.

  4. Freight and destination charges — port of departure, container type, duty, and the last mile to your site.

  5. Site preparation — footings, access road, crane hire, utility connections.

  6. Specification upgrades — climate-rated glazing, heavier insulation, custom colors and branding.

As a rule of thumb for planning, most projects we quote land in a range that is meaningfully below a comparable permanent build, and the gap widens when you factor in how fast the unit starts earning. For a campsite or resort, the calculation that matters is not cost per square meter — it is how many nights of occupancy it takes to pay the unit off. Faster installation and no wet trades are why these projects often reach revenue months earlier than a traditional build.

Send us your site, guest count and finish expectation through the contact page and you will get a real figure rather than a range.

The installation timeline, honestly

Buyers consistently underestimate how little work happens on their site, and how much paperwork happens first. A realistic sequence:

StageTypical durationWho does it
Design confirmation and customization sign-offProject dependentYou + factory
Production10–15 daysFactory
Footings and site access preparationRuns in parallelYour local contractor
Ocean freight and customsRoute dependentFreight forwarder
Crane lift and placementApproximately 2 hours per unitCrane operator
Flat-pack assembly (if applicable)2–3 days with 3–4 workersYour crew, guide drawings provided
Water and electricity connection, handoverSame day once utilities reach the padYour electrician and plumber

Two mistakes show up here again and again. First, buyers prepare the pad for the unit but forget the utilities, then watch a finished capsule sit empty for three weeks waiting for a connection. Second, they book the crane before confirming the freight arrival date. Sequence the crane last, not first.

Where these units earn their keep

Capsule houses suit some projects far better than others. The pattern we see across our export markets:

Glamping and resort accommodation

This is the core use case. The look does the marketing — guests photograph the unit and post it, which is free acquisition for the operator. Add an apple cabin layout and you can vary the product mix on one site without a second supplier. We covered site-level planning in the apple capsule house for tourism guide.

Remote and off-grid sites

No pile foundation, low water use on site, and the option to generate your own power. Capsules get placed on terrain that would bankrupt a traditional build — mountainsides, forestry land, beach edges.

Backyard offices, studios and guest units

The fastest-growing residential use we see in North America and Europe. Clients want a finished workspace in the garden without a two-year permitting and construction cycle.

Harsh climates

Aluminum shells and proper insulation handle extremes that wooden cabins do not, provided the specification matches the location. Coastal salt, desert heat and hard freezes each call for slightly different details — see the extreme climate deployment guide before ordering for an exposed site.

Five mistakes we see buyers make

Every one of these has cost a real project weeks or money. None of them are difficult to avoid.

1. Choosing on appearance alone. Shell material and insulation are invisible in a photograph and decide everything about long-term performance. Ask for construction layers, not renders.

2. Forgetting to verify crane and truck access. Measure the narrowest point on the route before you choose the model.

3. Skipping the wind and seismic numbers. If your site is coastal, on a ridge, or in a seismic zone, a rating is not a nice-to-have.

4. Treating freight as an afterthought. Ask early whether the unit ships flat or assembled. The freight difference between the two can reshape your budget.

5. Ignoring maintenance in the business plan. Preventative work on seals, glazing and coatings is cheap; water damage behind a bathroom panel is not. Our maintenance guide has the monthly and seasonal checklists, and your operator should read it before the first guest arrives, not after.

Questions to ask any capsule house manufacturer

Hand this list to every supplier you talk to. The answers will separate the factories from the resellers faster than any website will.

If customization matters to your project — a branded resort look, a specific layout, an unusual plot — the process is more structured than most buyers expect. We broke the whole flow down in our custom space capsule house and OEM guide.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to build and install a space capsule house?

Production typically takes 10–15 days after design sign-off. On site, a crane places each unit in about two hours. Flat-pack models need roughly 2–3 days of assembly with 3–4 workers following our guide drawings, then the unit is ready once water and electricity are connected.

Do space capsule houses need a concrete foundation?

No pile foundation is required. Capsules sit on simple footings, which keeps site preparation inexpensive, avoids disturbing the ground, and allows the unit to be relocated later if your plans change.

Can a space capsule house be used off-grid?

Yes. Combining solar panels, a wind turbine and battery storage gives a fully independent power supply for remote sites. Sizing that system correctly is the key step, and we published the calculations and cost breakdown separately.

How much does a space capsule house cost?

It depends on floor area, finish level, off-grid equipment, freight route and site preparation. Two projects with the same model can differ substantially once destination charges and site work are included. Give us your site and specification and we will price the actual project.

What is the difference between a space capsule house and an apple cabin?

Both are prefabricated modular units built to similar standards. A capsule house has a curved or boat-like shell, while an apple cabin uses a squarer, more conventional footprint. The choice is mostly about the look you want guests to photograph and how the units sit together on a site.

How long does a space capsule house last?

Our units are designed for a service life of up to 50 years, with aluminum composite construction and fluorocarbon-coated surfaces resisting UV, salt and temperature cycling. Actual lifespan depends on climate and maintenance — coastal installations need more frequent seal and coating checks.
