At least once a week, a resort developer or glamping operator asks us the same thing: “I like the look of an apple capsule house, but how do I actually buy one from China without losing money on hidden costs or ending up with a unit that does not fit my site?”
It is a fair question. The product photographs well, the videos look simple, and the price spread between suppliers is wide enough to make anyone nervous. What is not visible in the marketing is the part that decides whether a project succeeds: how the unit is manufactured, what can be customized, how it ships to a remote location, and who installs it.
We have been building and exporting apple capsule houses from our factory in Weifang, Shandong since 2021. Our units are now installed at resorts, glamping sites and boutique hotels across Europe, North America, Southeast Asia and the Middle East. This guide is what we tell buyers before they sign a purchase order — covering OEM options, manufacturing standards, freight, installation and the red flags that separate a real factory from a middleman.
The short version
An apple capsule house is a factory-built modular unit with a rounded shell, panoramic glazing and a complete interior, usually shipped flat-pack in a 40HQ container.
OEM customization covers size, layout, exterior color, smart systems, bathroom specification and even branded finishes.
Manufacturing lead time is typically 10–15 days, and installation is measured in days, not months.
Remote site delivery is the part that separates suppliers: ask about crane access, container type and last-mile logistics before you choose a model.
What you are actually buying
An apple capsule house is a prefabricated accommodation module with a curved, boat-like shell. It is not a shipping container with windows cut into it, and it is not a static caravan. The shell is usually aluminum-composite, the frame is galvanized steel, and the interior arrives factory-finished with insulation, electrics, plumbing, bathroom and kitchen modules already in place.
Our standard Apple Cabin range runs from a 16.8sqm compact pod up to a 27sqm family or boutique B&B layout. All of them share the same structural DNA — aerospace-grade aluminum framing, 270° panoramic glazing, a skylight, smart-home controls and a complete bathroom — but the floor area and sleeping capacity change. For a full breakdown of the models and which tourism use case each fits best, see our apple capsule house for tourism guide.
Why hotels and tourism projects source from China
There are three reasons boutique hotels, glamping operators and eco-resort developers keep coming to Chinese manufacturers for these units.
Speed. A traditional resort room or cabin can take 6–12 months from design to guest-ready. A capsule house is typically in production for 10–15 days and on site within weeks after shipping. For operators trying to catch a season, that gap is the difference between opening this year and next year.
Cost structure. Factory labor and steel-aluminum supply chains in China keep the unit cost lower than equivalent builds in most Western markets. The savings are not only in the product itself but in the reduced site work: no wet trades, no months of subcontractor coordination, no weather delays.
OEM flexibility. A real manufacturer can change the exterior color, adjust the interior layout, upgrade the bathroom, add smart controls, configure the glazing for a hot or cold climate, and even apply a resort’s own branding. A trader selling stock units cannot.
How apple capsule home manufacturing actually works
Most buyers never see the factory floor, so it helps to know what should be happening between your deposit and the delivery.
Shell fabrication
The curved panels are cut from aluminum-composite sheet, formed, and joined to a galvanized steel chassis. The quality of the coating matters more than most people realize. We use a fluorocarbon finish because it holds up against UV, salt air and temperature swings for decades. A cheaper painted finish will look fine for the first year and then chalk.
Insulation and systems
High-density polyurethane panels form the thermal layer. Windows are Low-E hollow glass, and the unit is pre-wired for lighting, air conditioning, fresh air and smart controls. The bathroom module is built as a complete pod and dropped in before the interior walls close.
Quality checks
Before anything leaves the factory, the unit should pass a full inspection: water-tightness test on the shell, electrical safety check, appliance function check, and a walk-through of the interior fit-out. Ask any supplier for their inspection checklist in writing. If they do not have one, they are assembling, not manufacturing.
Certifications to demand
For export markets, CE and ISO certification are the minimum. Depending on your country, you may also need local structural or electrical compliance documentation. A good supplier will tell you which certifications they hold and which ones you need to arrange locally.
OEM apple capsule house: what can really be changed
“OEM” gets used loosely in this industry. Here is what a genuine OEM program from a manufacturer should cover:
| Element | Typical customization range |
|---|---|
| Exterior color / finish | Powder coat or fluorocarbon in RAL colors; branded wraps possible for large orders |
| Interior layout | Beds, sofa, kitchen position, storage, desk areas |
| Bathroom specification | Shower size, vanity, composting or standard toilet, ventilation |
| Glazing | Tint level, Low-E upgrades, hurricane-rated glass for coastal sites |
| Smart systems | Lighting scenes, climate control, voice control, keyless entry |
| Climate upgrades | Extra insulation, upgraded HVAC, heated floors for cold climates |
| Branding | Logo placement, custom exterior graphics, branded welcome panels |
| Power source | Grid-ready, solar + battery, or hybrid off-grid system |
The key is that customization should be documented in approved drawings before production starts. Verbal promises at the quoting stage are worthless once the steel is cut.
Delivery to remote locations: the part nobody shows in the video
This is where projects live or die. A beautiful unit in a factory in Weifang is not the same as a beautiful unit on a cliff in Portugal or an island in Thailand. You need to plan the chain from factory gate to your pad.
Flat-pack vs assembled shipping
Most apple capsule houses can ship flat-pack inside a standard 40HQ container. That keeps ocean freight predictable and avoids the over-width permits that an assembled unit needs. The trade-off is 2–3 days of on-site assembly with a small crew, following factory guide drawings.
For sites where local labor is expensive or unavailable, some buyers choose assembled delivery on a flat-rack container. It costs more to move, but the unit is lifted straight off the truck and placed on the pad.
Remote and island sites
If your project is on an island, in the mountains, or at the end of a dirt road, you need to answer these questions before ordering:
What is the maximum container size that can reach the site?
Is there a hardstand for a mobile crane, or do we need an all-terrain crane?
What is the narrowest point on the access road?
Will the unit need a ferry or barge leg?
Who handles customs clearance and inland trucking at your end?
We have had clients assume a standard truck would reach their site, only to discover the final 500 meters was a walking track. Measure it before you choose the model.
Crane and placement
A typical unit is lifted and placed in about two hours once the crane is on site. The pad itself does not need piles. Simple footings are enough, which keeps site preparation cheap and means the unit can be relocated later if your layout changes.
Apple capsule home installation: what happens on site
Installation is simpler than conventional construction, but it is not zero work. A realistic on-site sequence looks like this:
Site prep: level the pad, run utilities to the edge, confirm crane access.
Delivery and lift: the unit or flat-pack panels arrive, and the crane places the shell.
Assembly: for flat-pack units, 3–4 workers follow guide drawings for 2–3 days.
Utility connection: electrician and plumber connect water, sewer and power.
Smart system setup and handover: test controls, appliances and finishes.
The most common delay is not the capsule. It is the local contractor waiting for a utility connection. Prepare the pad and utilities in parallel with production, not after the unit arrives.
Solar powered apple capsule home for off-grid tourism
For remote glamping sites, island resorts and eco-parks, the grid may not reach the plot. A solar-powered apple capsule home combines roof-mounted panels, battery storage and an efficient HVAC system to make the unit self-sufficient.
The sizing depends on climate and guest load, not just the size of the unit. A 16.8sqm pod used by two guests in a sunny region needs a smaller array than the same pod used as a four-person family base in a cloudy winter location. If off-grid is part of your plan, mention it during the OEM phase so the roof structure, electrical panel and battery bay are sized correctly.
We published a full system sizing guide for solar, wind and battery combinations in our off-grid energy guide.
How to choose an apple capsule house China supplier
Use this list as a filter. Any serious supplier should be able to answer every question clearly.
Where is your factory, and can I visit?
What certifications do you hold — CE, ISO, and any country-specific approvals?
What wind and seismic ratings are your units engineered for?
What is your standard production lead time and minimum order quantity?
Can you provide approved drawings before production?
What is included in the quoted price — unit only, or also freight, insurance and customs support?
Do you ship flat-pack or assembled, and which do you recommend for my site?
What installation guidance do you provide — drawings, video, remote support, on-site technician?
What is the warranty period, and what does it cover?
Can you supply spare parts and panels in three, five or ten years?
If a supplier cannot answer the last one, they are probably a trader, not a manufacturer.
Red flags that should make you walk away
These are not theoretical. We have seen buyers lose deposits or receive units that do not match the photos because they missed the warning signs.
No factory visit allowed. A real manufacturer will show you the production line.
Prices far below the market. Aluminum, glass and insulation have a floor cost. A price that ignores that floor is cutting something you cannot see.
Vague answers about certification. “We can get CE” is not the same as “We hold CE.”
No signed drawings before production. Without approved drawings, you have no contract on what will be built.
Pressure to pay 100% upfront. Standard terms are a deposit with balance before shipment, often backed by a letter of credit for larger orders.
No reference projects. Ask for photos and contactable clients in your region.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between an apple capsule house and a space capsule house?
Both are factory-built modular accommodation units. An apple capsule house usually has a squarer, rounded shape optimized for hotel and resort layouts, while a space capsule house has a more elongated, curved shell. Construction standards are similar; the choice depends on the look you want and how the units fit together on your site. For the broader category, see our space capsule house buyer’s guide.
How long does it take to manufacture an apple capsule house?
Standard production lead time is 10–15 days after design approval and deposit. Custom OEM orders may add a few days for special finishes or layouts. Shipping time depends on the destination and port.
Can I buy just one unit?
Yes. Our minimum order quantity is one unit, which makes the product accessible for boutique hotels and pilot glamping projects that want to test the concept before scaling.
Do apple capsule houses work for cold or coastal climates?
Yes, with the right specification. Upgraded insulation, Low-E glazing and corrosion-resistant coatings are available for harsh environments. We covered climate-specific deployment in our extreme climate guide.
How are apple capsule houses transported to remote locations?
Most units ship flat-pack in standard 40HQ containers for cost efficiency. For island or mountain sites, the container is unloaded at the nearest port or truck-accessible point, then a crane or flatbed completes the last mile. Some projects require a flat-rack or assembled delivery if local labor is unavailable.
What does OEM customization cost?
It depends on the change. Color and basic layout adjustments are usually included or low-cost. Upgrades like branded wraps, hurricane-rated glass, heated floors or off-grid power systems add cost. The supplier should itemize these before production starts.
